Avastin is a monoclonal antibody , a type of genetically engineered protein , that binds to another protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which spurs the growth of blood vessels. Avastin was approved by the FDA in 2004 specifically for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Given along with traditional chemotherapy , Avastin extends life expectancy by an average of about five months.
