FAS gene: A gene that encodes one of several proteins important to apoptosis , the normal process through which cells die. Mutations in the FAS gene have been found in ALPS (the autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome), a disease in which there is failure of lymphocytes to die on schedule. As a result, lymphocytes stay about and attack the body's own tissues, a condition known as autoimmunity . Mutations in FAS account for about 83% of cases of ALPS.
The FAS gene is on chromosome 10q24.1. The gene is member 6 of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily. FAS is now officially known as TNFRSF6. It has also confusingly been known as APO-1, APT1, and CD95.
