GENERIC NAME: diclofenac and misoprostol

BRAND NAME: Arthrotec

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Arthrotec is a combination of diclofenac and misoprostol. Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug (NSAID) similar to ibuprofen (Motrin; Advil), naproxen (Naprosyn), and others. Misoprostol is a synthetic (man- made) prostaglandin that stimulates secretion of mucus in the gastrointestinal tract. Misoprostol has been shown to reduce the frequency of ulcers of the stomach caused by NSAIDs. Arthrotec was approved by the FDA in December of 1997.

GENERIC AVAILABLE: No

PREPARATIONS: Arthrotec 50 contains diclofenac sodium 50 mg and misoprostol 200 µg per tablet. Arthrotec 75 contains diclofenac sodium 75 mg and misoprostol 200 µg per tablet.

STORAGE: The tablets should be kept at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F).

PRESCRIBED FOR: Arthrotec is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

DOSING: The usual dose is one tablet two to four times daily. Taking Arthrotec with food may reduce stomach upset. It is recommended that Arthrotec not be taken with alcohol because of the increased risk for ulcers caused by diclofenac.

PREGNANCY: Since misoprostol can cause abortions, Arthrotec should not be used by women who are pregnant.

SIDE EFFECTS: Please see diclofenac and misoprostol . The likelihood of side effects with Arthrotec is higher than with diclofenac alone. Abdominal pain and diarrhea each occur in 1 of every 5 persons. Nausea occurs in 1 of every 10, and flatulence ("gas") occurs in 1 of every 11. Overall, about 1 of every 9 persons stops taking Arthrotec because of side effects.
