Lactose Tolerance Test
How is the lactose tolerance test done?
The classic lactose tolerance test is performed after drinking a liquid that contains sugar called lactose. Several blood samples are taken over a 2-hour period to measure the blood glucose (sugar) level, which indicates how well the body is able to digest the ingested lactose.
How are the results of the test interpreted?
Normally, when lactose reaches the small intestine, lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose which are then absorbed into the blood. This absorption raises a person's blood glucose level. If lactose is not completely broken down, the blood glucose level does not rise, which indicates lactose intolerance.
What other tests can detect lactose intolerance?
Other tests used to detect lactose intolerance include the hydrogen breath test and stool acidity test.
