Pheochromocytoma
The adrenal glands are small hormone producing (endocrine) glands located above the kidneys. The outer portions of the adrenal glands produce cortisol which is a very important hormone for bodily functions. The inner portion of the glands produce adrenaline. Pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor with excess production of adrenaline and derives from the inner layers of the adrenal glands. The symptoms of pheochromocytoma are due to the high levels of adrenaline. These symptoms include palpitations, weight loss, sweating, and high blood pressure (sometimes severe high blood pressure). Without adequate treatment, the severe high blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart attack .
Patients with unrecognized and untreated pheochromocytoma are at risk of developing life threatening pheochromocytoma crisis (with severe high blood pressure) when undergoing general anesthesia for surgery.
The treatment of pheochromocytoma includes first controlling the high blood pressure with certain selected high blood pressure medications. After the blood pressure is under control, the treatment of this disease is removal by surgery the abnormal adrenal gland.
